Dirty details.

5:20pm

We’re back outside, where I opt out of a shot, preferring a glass of perfectly chilled champagne as I chat and mingle around the pool. Augie is still inside, chatting with the boys.

London rolls up next to me. “Aren’t you the popular girl?” she slurs.

“What do you mean?” I ask.

She shoves her phone out, showing off a tabloid photo of Dustin running with me out to the beach. If you didn’t know who he was carrying, you’d never know it was me. You can’t see my face, just my barely covered ass on top of his shoulder and the back of my hair.

But then she scrolls, and there’s a photo of us out in the ocean together.

Him kissing my cheek.

Then him confronting Kaylee.

Her slugging him.

“Apparently, it’s your fault they broke up,” she says. “And here I thought you liked Augie. Or was it Beckham? No, wait. Branson? I can’t keep up.”

“Just to be clear, Dustin is an old family friend. And if you want to be friends, London, then stop judging me.”

She rolls her eyes, turns her back on me, and marches away—leaving her phone still in my hand.

A text pops up from Rachel, and I notice that it’s Rachel who sent the tabloid link to London. Which means she wanted the dirty details. Probably looking for any fuel to break up me and Augie.

Doesn’t she know that we’re here together?

I stop Zoey and pull her aside. “Random question. Has Rachel Tran dated much?”

She squints her eyes, thinking. “Um, to be honest, I don’t know. We’ve been in classes together, but we aren’t friends. I’m sure I can find out though.”

“She wants Augie for herself. I think she’s using Branson and London to try to break us up.”

“I wouldn’t put it past her. I’ve never hung out with her because I can’t stand her constant bragging. It’s like she’s trying to convince people why she’s so awesome.”

“And maybe herself,” I add.

Zoey looks at me seriously. “Oh my gosh, you’re right. She fakes her confidence. Which means …”

“She really isn’t.”

“Like a bully. Can you use that against her?”

“I don’t plan on going to war with her,” I scoff.

“If she’s trying to break you and Augie up, she’s already declared it, girl.”

“Do you like the drama?” I ask Zoey, suddenly feeling tired.

“Like girl-drama type of stuff?”

“Yeah.”

“Not at all. I just want to live my life. That’s why I wanted to be in Hawthorne House. Way less drama.”

“Why do you think that is?” I ask, taking another sip of champagne.

“Sounds silly, but I think maybe the decor draws in old money.” She laughs. “Which means we have enough family drama and don’t need it at school. Now, Calder is the opposite. I think they thrive on the drama. We joke that their house motto ought to be, Come cry a river with me.”

“What about Bartlett and Wyndham?” I ask.

“Bartlett students are smart. High on life, they say, but they thrive on energy drinks, late-night studying, and gaming. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Wyndham.
