Dirty details.
5:20pm
Weâre back outside, where I opt out of a shot, preferring a glass of perfectly chilled champagne as I chat and mingle around the pool. Augie is still inside, chatting with the boys.
London rolls up next to me. âArenât you the popular girl?â she slurs.
âWhat do you mean?â I ask.
She shoves her phone out, showing off a tabloid photo of Dustin running with me out to the beach. If you didnât know who he was carrying, youâd never know it was me. You canât see my face, just my barely covered ass on top of his shoulder and the back of my hair.
But then she scrolls, and thereâs a photo of us out in the ocean together.
Him kissing my cheek.
Then him confronting Kaylee.
Her slugging him.
âApparently, itâs your fault they broke up,â she says. âAnd here I thought you liked Augie. Or was it Beckham? No, wait. Branson? I canât keep up.â
âJust to be clear, Dustin is an old family friend. And if you want to be friends, London, then stop judging me.â
She rolls her eyes, turns her back on me, and marches awayâleaving her phone still in my hand.
A text pops up from Rachel, and I notice that itâs Rachel who sent the tabloid link to London. Which means she wanted the dirty details. Probably looking for any fuel to break up me and Augie.
Doesnât she know that weâre here together?
I stop Zoey and pull her aside. âRandom question. Has Rachel Tran dated much?â
She squints her eyes, thinking. âUm, to be honest, I donât know. Weâve been in classes together, but we arenât friends. Iâm sure I can find out though.â
âShe wants Augie for herself. I think sheâs using Branson and London to try to break us up.â
âI wouldnât put it past her. Iâve never hung out with her because I canât stand her constant bragging. Itâs like sheâs trying to convince people why sheâs so awesome.â
âAnd maybe herself,â I add.
Zoey looks at me seriously. âOh my gosh, youâre right. She fakes her confidence. Which means â¦â
âShe really isnât.â
âLike a bully. Can you use that against her?â
âI donât plan on going to war with her,â I scoff.
âIf sheâs trying to break you and Augie up, sheâs already declared it, girl.â
âDo you like the drama?â I ask Zoey, suddenly feeling tired.
âLike girl-drama type of stuff?â
âYeah.â
âNot at all. I just want to live my life. Thatâs why I wanted to be in Hawthorne House. Way less drama.â
âWhy do you think that is?â I ask, taking another sip of champagne.
âSounds silly, but I think maybe the decor draws in old money.â She laughs. âWhich means we have enough family drama and donât need it at school. Now, Calder is the opposite. I think they thrive on the drama. We joke that their house motto ought to be, Come cry a river with me.â
âWhat about Bartlett and Wyndham?â I ask.
âBartlett students are smart. High on life, they say, but they thrive on energy drinks, late-night studying, and gaming. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Wyndham.
